Excursion

Gatchina Palace and Estate Museum

Laid out at the end of the 18th century during the life of Prince Grigory Orlov, the park in Gatchina is one of the oldest of its kind. The large, unpretentious, and natural landscapes of Gatchina Park make it a popular visitor attraction. The park includes botanical gardens, several forest mazes, and lakes. The White and Silver Lakes, small rivers and canals make up a quarter of the park, and are open for boat trips. A number of surprise pavilions are scattered throughout the park. These were designed to surprise visitors by creating a sharp contrast between the simple surrounding landscape and sophisticated decorative features.
The park’s main landmark is Gatchina Palace – a unique architectural monument and the only castle-style palace in the region surrounding St. Petersburg. The palace combines elements of a mediaeval castle and a country residence, and was a much-loved retreat among members of the imperial family.
Visitors can also see the Priory Palace (22A, Chkalova Street, Gatchina, Leningrad Region) – a unique building designed by Nikolay Lvov and built in 1798–1799. The palace was built for the knights of Saint John of Jerusalem (the Maltese order).

At the heart of the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg is the Peter and Paul Fortress – the historic core and one of the main symbols of the city. The iconic building, from where the history of St. Petersburg began, has fulfilled a number of roles throughout the centuries, from a defensive fortification to Russia’s main prison for political opponents. The dominant feature of the complex – which is somewhat unusual for Russian architecture – is the Peter and Paul Cathedral, where almost all of Russia’s emperors are buried.
